POWER FOR ANIMATION AND MOBILITY
A 500 horsepower engine drives the fluid power pumps which gives the monster lifelike animation, exciting crushing strength and surface mobility.

FIGURE 5a. Monster Power!

Hot air balloonist, Kris Heffleger stands next to ROBOSAURUS's 500 horsepower twin turbocharged, intercooled Cummins 444B diesel. This Cummins Engine Company, Inc. powerplant is widely used on highway trucks. The engine was placed as far aft as possible on the tail to help act as a counterweight.

FIGURE 5b. ROBOSAURUS's 25 Hydraulic Cylinders Range in Size from 1 1/2" up to 8" Bore.

A pair of 8" bore Parker 2H cylinders provide a total 300,000 pounds of force to rotate the entire upper body up from the horizontal highway driving mode. One of these 8" cylinders is pointed out by welder, Chuck Gilbert.

FIGURE 5c. Body Pivot Bellcranks

Bellcranks made of 3" thick flame cut steel were required to support the 300,000 pounds of pushing force of the 8" bore Parker cylinders.

FIGURE 5d. Wheel Drive Chain And Sprocket

2" pitch, #160 chain was required to transmit the torque output of the double reduction planetary hydraulic motor to the wheels in the front "paws". A couple of feet of this size chain weighs more than most bicycles!

FIGURE 5e. Left Leg Wheel Drive Assembly

A pair Goodyear abrasion resistant mining service tires, rated to carry 10,400 pounds of load each when inflated to 150 PSI, were used in each paw. Their small 29" diameter solved a major packaging problem.
